Motivation is not something that can be given to you by some external source. It is derived from within and there is no secret method to achieving it. Everyone, even the most motivated people can find themselves feeling unambitious at times.

1. Stop Making Excuses.

Understand that YOU are in control of YOUR OWN destiny and nobody can motivate you but yourself. Excuses are often used to place blame on circumstances beyond our control so that we don't feel guilty. In order to focus on future success, take responsibility for your actions by believing that you have the power to influence your situations and environments. Don't blame others or fate to escape taking ownership of your mistakes and failures. Blaming external sources is a clever method we use to protect our self-image, but it is holding us back from our true potential. Compile a list of the excuses you make, figure out why you make them, and then work on how to stop making them.

2. Set a Goal

Create a realistic and attainable goal that will give you a sense of achievement once you’ve accomplished it. Make sure that you keep a record of your victories so you can refer back to them whenever you need a confidence boost. Many times we get overwhelmed by all of the commitments we have in our lives. We have to learn how to take a step back and complete one goal at a time so that we don't take on more tasks then we can manage. To attain a goal you have to give it your complete and total focus before moving on to the next. Once you have eliminated all distractions, the next step is to define your goal and figure out your plan to achieve it.

3. Reward Yourself

Results don't always come instantaneously. It can take years to finish your degree, or months to reach your ideal weight. To overcome this unfortunate fact of life, find ways to reward yourself because you can't depend on life to do it for you. Creating small rewards for short-time goals can be fun and effective. If you are having trouble finishing your school work, set up a reward system. Tell yourself that going out with your friends and having fun is your reward for finishing your homework. Something that you hate doing won't be something you want to keep up with so you have to make it enjoyable. The more enjoyable it is, the quicker the end result will come.

4. Think About Benefits & Eliminate Negative Thoughts

Monitor your thoughts and start practicing positive “self-talk”. Words are wonderful when they are used in a proper way. Whenever you find yourself thinking negative thoughts, quickly replace those thoughts with corresponding positive words. Get rid of “I am never going to finish!” and replace it with, “There are far worse things I could be going through right now! I can do this!”. Your words and inward thoughts directly influence the way your unconscious mind processes your wants and desires. If those thoughts and words are constantly negative, then your unconscious mind will also possess that negativity and create a world that reflects that negativity.

Often, we think about how hard something can be. But instead of thinking about how difficult something is, think about all the positive things you will get out of it. For instance, instead of thinking about how tired you get from exercising, try to focus on how much healthier you will be in the future. The benefits of something will help inspire you to keep pushing.

5. Get Support

Sometimes encouragement and support from loved ones can give you that extra push you need to keep going. For example, if you want to start training for a 5k race, you can workout with a friend. Engaging in activities with friends makes the task brainless-fun that benefits both of you in the end. If you decide to begin a healthy lifestyle journey, you can join online forums that will help inspire you. Forums are a good way for people to share their experiences so that others can relate and learn from them. Find your support network, either in the real world, online, or both.
